Mechanical Dilatation.—It would be logical to expectmechanical distention of the pelvis to result from the ob-struction caused by a stone within it. This occurs to anoticeable degree in but a small percentage of cases. Whenpresent, the distention is characterized by an increase in theoutline of the free pelvis proportionately greater than that 190 PYELOGRAPHY in the calyces. Hydronephrosis accompanying stone in thepelvis is usually smaller than that found accompanyingconstriction in the upper ureter from anatomic , however, a stone situated at the uretero-pelvic juncture partially obstructing the ureter will causehydronephrosis of considerable degree. Not infrequently the pelvic outline assumes the character-
