Sala Tàpies, Palau de La Generalitat, Barcelona

In the Sala Tàpies meetings are held by the Government of Catalonia and chaired by the President of the Generalitat. There is a large mural by the Catalan painter Tàpies. The Palau de la Generalitat is the seat of the Government of Catalonia and the Presidency of the Generalitat. The oldest part of the building dates from 1403 and is one of the few medieval buildings in Europe that is still used as the seat of the original institution that built it. After the 1936-39 Civil War Franco abolished the institutions of the Generalitat and it became disused but when democracy was restored again after the 1977 General Election, the Palau became once again the seat of the Generalitat.
