This has been going on for seven 372 Recent Experiences in the Treatment of Mammary Carcinomaby Means of Heavily Filtered X-Ray* KjOTWITHSTANDING the manypromises held out to the public rela-tive to the cure of cancer by its earlyremoval, there is a definite skepticismon the part of many well informed, ex-perienced individuals as to the perma-nency of cure in the majority of femalesufferers from mammary carcinoma. Itrequires no great effort to secure recordsof unfavorable results in cases whereradical surgical methods were institutedwithin a few days of the first indicationof the disease. This skepticism increasesproportionately as the time betweendiagnosis and removal. We have no great occasion to con-gratulate ourselves on the managementof such cases, and any proposal for im-provement should meet with kind andearnest consideration. Surgery, as ap-plied to mammary carcinoma, has beenwell standardized, while x-ray techniquehas not. It is not probable that thex-ray is destined to occupy either themiddle ground between
