In Bram Stoker's novel Dracula, the stricken Russian ship Demeter from Varna came ashore on Tate Hill Beach, Whitby, Yorkshire - This early photograph of Tate Hill Beach and Pier, Whitby, Nth Yorkshire, UK, shows both as they would have been in Bram Stoker's time. On the cliff behind can be seen the parish church of St Mary reached by 199 steps. Today many of the buildings on the shoreline have changed or vanished altogether.
