Au-gust 15th the Army moved forward, and on the 20th the Bat-tle of Fallen Timl^er was fought and won. August 27th theArmy returned to Fort Defiance where it remained until 14September, 1794. During this sojourn the blockhouses weremade bomb proof and were prepared for winter use; thestockades were strengthened, the moats enlarged and picketsset over them, the underground pathway to the river wascompleted, and the Fort generally was put in condition tosuccessfully defy any foe that would come against it. AVithsuch assurances in mind when first built. General Waynenamed the works Fort Detiance. It was the completest andstrongest fortitication built by this able General.
