HOROSCOPES - ELIZABETH 1, QUEEN OF ENGLAND Elizabeth (daughter of Henry VIII, whose chart is included in the Charles Walker Collection) was born on 7 September 1533, in London, the daughter of the unfortunate Anne Boleyn. According to her biographer, Neville Willims, Elizabeth: Queen of England (1967), p. 1-2. she was born between 3 and 4 pm, 'and confounded her parents and astounded the astrologers by being a girl.' According to the Mason-astrologer, Ebenezer Sibly, A New and Complete Illustration of the Occult Sciences (1790), Elizabeth was born at 02:26 pm, in London. As one of the most significant historical figures of the period, it is inevitable that a large number of charts relating to Elizabeth's birth were published, both during her life and in the century that followed: some of the more interesting are those in unpublished manuscript form in the Bodleian and the British Library. The chart published by Junctinus, Speculum Astrologiae (1583), is certainly in error in giving the chart an ascendant of 17 Capricorn, though it agrees, in all significant planetary placings, with the later chart recorded by the English astrologer, John Gadbury, Collectio Geniturarum (1662). Gadbury's Ascendant of 28 Sagittarius not only corresponds to what we know of Elizabeth's personality, but was also widely adopted by later astrologers - in fact, the Sibly chart, which I have used as the basis of my own, is little more than a copy of the Gadbury figure. Because Sibly's chart is reasonably accurate, I have used this as the basis for my own sigillization, merely adjusting the data to represent the accurate horoscope. I have, however, taken the opportunity of reproducing the engraved portrait-chart of Elizabeth from the Sibly plate. The portrait displayed in my own version of the horoscope is a nineteenth century hand-coloured steel-print, published on behalf of the Marquis of Salisbury, of the painting by Zucchero - the so-called Rainbow Portrait.
