The marble tomb of famed Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de Leon is in the Cathedral of San Juan Bautista in historic Old San Juan in Puerto Rico (PR), an unincorporated territory of the United States in the Caribbean Sea. The explorer died in Cuba in 1521 from wounds received while fighting Indians during his second voyage to Florida, but his body was transferred to Puerto Rico, which he had conquered for Spain in 1508. His remains were originally entombed in the Church of San Jose until being moved to the cathedral in 1908. Puerto Rico's third largest city, Ponce, is named for the adventurer
