He obtained an education in the publicschools of Mapleton, Harrisburg and Mount Union, o1)taining, soonafter leaving school, a position in the freight office of the Pennsylvaniarailroad at East Liberty, Pennsylvania, where he remained for fiveyears, later becoming a passenger brakeman on the Pittsburgh divisionof the same road.
