I will now leave Emanuel to take him up again, when I cometc the exodus of the family from Pennsylvania. Gabriel Carpenter, my great great grandfather, was the sec-ond son of Heinrich. He was born in Switzerland in 1704and died in Earl township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania,in 1767. His house is still standing at the forks of the Graff, andCarpenters Runs, and in a good state of preservation, althoughbuilt of hewed logs; and the stone Spring house, and the bigspring are still there. He practiced surveying, hada saw and grist mill, and owned a large tract of fine land. About1730 he married Appolina Hermann, whose parents were promi-nent Swiss people of the settlement. I find from the recordsthat he furnished a team and flour for the Braddock expedition,and that he had great trouble in getting pay for the same. Hewas a spare man, over six feet tall, with black hair and died several years before the Eevolution, but his wife, Appo-lina, lived till 17
