The electrical conductance of these joints comparesfavorably with that of the solid rail. Up to date thePublic Service Railway has installed about 1000 of theelectric arc-weld joints of various kinds and consideringthe newness of the method the joints seem to be satis-factory. It is ourintention to continuethe installation ofthese joints, partic-ularly when trafficcannot be held up. It is the writersopinion that thesewelds are not onlyapparently satisfac-tory but have twostrong features intheir favor; first,low cost; and, sec-ond, convenience ofinstallation. More-over, a minimumamount of pavementneed be disturbedin order to install a joint. Then again, it is con-venient to install joints as the rail is being laid so thatthe track work can be completed one small piece at
