Anti-government protesters gathering during the demonstration at the Sanam protesters converged on the historic royal heart of Bangkok today to demand the resignation of the military-backed government and reforms of the monarchy, long considered a taboo subject in Thailand. The demonstrators gathered first at the Thammasat university campus on a college football field that was the scene of a massacre of left-wing students by pro-regime paramilitaries in 1976.
