Tocounteract the efforts of his enemies, asecret society was organized in Smithsfavor in October, 1838, called the Dan-ites, with the avowed purpose of sup-porting Smith at all hazards, of up-holding the authority of his revelationand decrees as superior to the laws ofthe land, and of helping him to getpossession, first of the State, then of theUnited States, and ultimately of theworld.
