Coyote (Canis latrans) on sand dune at night under starry sky, Galveston, Texas. This population is believed to have genes of red wolf (Canis rufus).

Many coyotes (Canis latrans) in the southern US, including the Galveston population, are natural hybrids of the nearly-extinct red wolf (Canis rufus) and harbor up to 69% of its “ghost” DNA in their genomes.
