Thesestreets took the generaldirection of the trails, andhence they are so crookedand planless. Stuyvesantlaid out and named about sixteen streets. In 1660 there were abouttwenty-eight streets and three hundred and forty-two houses inNew Amsterdam. On the east side of Manhattan south of Houston street and onthe west side south of 14th street the streets are irregular, crooked, and frequently twisted. North of these streets and in most of thenewer parts of Manhattan a regular city plan was followed. Theavenues run parallel with the Hudson river, and the streets run 70. Old View of what is now the JunctionOF Pearl and Chatham Streets 8TKEETS AND AVENUES 77 east and west. The avenues are known by numbers with the excep-tion of avenues A, B, C, D, Lexington, and Madison. The crossstreets are also numbered, and as a rule extend from river to is quite unfortunate that the distances between the avenuesare so great. If we had moreavenues, we would have morelines of travel running northand south. Most of the traveland traffic is north and are few avenues toaccommodate this travel andtraffic; therefore travel on theavenues is congested. Men-tion some attempts to relieve this congestion. What is Parkavenue a continuation of ? Mention the names given to 9th, 10th,and 11th avenues west of Central Park. What is the name of thecontinuation of 6th avenue north of Central Park ?
