St Mary the Less, founded around 1140, Chapel of St John’s College in Durham, England.


Durham, County Durham, England: on South Bailey, Chapel of St John’s College, the Church of St Mary the Less, founded around 1140 as a garrison chapel for soldiers stationed on the nearby city walls. Originally a Norman building, it was extensively renovated in 1847 and acquired by St John’s College in 1919. St John’s College was originally founded in 1909 to train ordinands for the Church of England, and became associated with Durham University in 1923. However, it is independent from the University, administratively and financially.
