Impact on an asteroid, computer artwork. Asteroids are large rocks left over after the solar system formed. Here, a smaller meteoroid is impacting the surface of the asteroid (lower right). Most of the thousands of asteroids in the solar system lie in the asteroid belt between the orbits of the planets Mars and Jupiter. Several mass extinctions in Earth's history are thought to have been caused by an asteroid impact.
