Vintage illustration depicting the fight for the heavyweight Championship of England between bare-knuckle boxers Tom Sayers (1826 - 1865) and William Perry (1819 - 1880). The battle took place on June 16 1857 on the Isle of Grain and Sayers, known as the "Brighton boy", defeated Perry, nicknamed "The Tipton Slasher", after 11 rounds. Sayers went on to defend the title four times before famously taking on American champion John C Heenan (1834 - 1873), aka "The Benicia Boy", in what is regarded as the first ever "world championship" battle at Farnborough, Hampshire, England, on April 17 1860 - a bout that ended in a draw after 42 rounds when spectators invaded the ring and police stopped proceedings. Sayers never fought again and died from tuberculosis and diabetes just a few years later. This illustration appeared in an 1899 supplement to the Police Gazette magazine based on an earlier engraving.
