Caledonian Railway Conner Class 98 2-4-0 on a train


These locomotives were built with raised fireboxes until 1868 when flush topped boilers began to be used, a dome on the firebox, during 1867 Salter safety valves were fitted. When 98 to 102, 108 to 112 were rebuilt they were fitted with flush topped Connors or Brittian boilers with a dome on the second casing ring and Ramsbottom safety valves. 466 to 471 and 30 to 41 were rebuilt with Drummond boilers with a dome that was off centre behind the middle boiler casing ring. During the rebuild 30 to 41 had cylinders upgraded to 17½in. and were reclassified as Class 30.
