GROVER, Thomas, one of the orig-inal pioneers of Utah, was born inWhitehall, Washington Co., New York,July 22, 1807, the son of Thomas Gro-ver and Polly Spalding. As the fa-ther, Thomas, had died during the pre-vious February, the rearing and teach-ing of the infant, as well as that ofhis brothers and sisters was left to hiswidowed mother. When the boy was twelve years oldhe entered a boat on the Erie Canalas a cabin boy and twelve years laterhe became captain of the boat In 1828 he married Caroline Whit-ing, the daughter of Nathaniel Whit-ing and Mercey Young, and while theywere still living at Whitehall, theiroldest daughter Jane was born. Alittle later he moved to Freedom, NewYork, where three other daughterswere born. It was at this point thathe first heard the Gospel and becamea member of the L. D. S. Church in1834. From a letter written March 2, 1886by Caroline Nickerson Hubbard to herdaughter Persia Grover Bunnell, thefollowing is taken: It was in Free-dom, Cattaraugus County, New York,where he and his wife first heard andembraced the Gospel. In 1834 the 138 LATTER-DAY SAINT Prophet Joseph and Sidney Rigdonwere the ones that bore the messageto them and baptized Brother Groverand some others.
