Human milk contains the ideal balance of nutrients for the baby and provides valuable antibodies which protect the child against infections such as gastroenteritis. It also provides the mother and the child with a physical closeness which strengthens the bond between them. Common problems in early lactation are engorged breasts, sore or cracked nipples and infections of the breasts. Engorged breasts are uncomfortable and may be relieved by expressing the milk; sore or cracked nipples are relieved by using a nipple shield whereas infections are treated with antibiotics.
