MODEL RELEASED. Fifth disease. 8 year old girl with red cheeks caused by fifth disease, also known as slapped cheek disease and erythema infectiosum. This is caused by the virus parvovirus B19, and symptoms also include fever. It is most common in children aged between 5 and 15. In adults the virus causes arthritis. In pregnant women it can cause spontaneous abortion or lead to birth defects. Treatment is of the fever, with anti-pyretic drugs, and rash, with soothing lotions, not the infection.
