Suspended above is the Botafumeiro, the famous silver thurible which is swung in a ritual that has taken place since the 11th century. The city is the terminus of the Way of St. James, the ancient Catholic pilgrimage to the reputed burial place of Saint James the Great in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.
