In these cases it is advantageous toturn the mother upon her side, separating her thighs widely. Thebody of the child should be carried backward as the arras emerge, pressure being made upon the chin to prevent extension. When theforehead has reached the pubic joint the body may be carried stronglyupward and forward, thus bringing the occiput over the pelvic floor. Fig. Delivery in breech presentation ; the fcetal back posterior. Breech labor may be complicated by extension of the arms above thehead and by extension of the head upon the trunk. Both of thesecomplications arise from traction upon the trunk or from strong expul-sive efforts on the part of the mother after the breech and legs havebeen born. These complications are dangerous to the child, becausethey delay labor and subject the child to pressure, and also because thetreatment of these complications exposes the foetal limbs to danger offracture. Two procedures are especially available in avoiding complications inbreech labor. One is to make as little traction as possible upon thetrunk, while the other consists in making pressure upon the uterus infollowing the child down from above during its birth. When the bodyhas been born and the arms and elbows cannot be felt, the arms mustbe brought down by the following manipulation : If the mother isexcessively sensitive and draws back at every eff
