The mantelpieceis very handsome, and was gilded ; the boldly carved cornice reaching tothe ceiling is in three divisions, with the arms in the centre panel ; it iscuriously like the chimney-piece at Headlam (p. 23), but finer in Taylor remarks, If you picture the room in its original condition,you will realize its gorgeous aspect—the shining panelled woodwork liningthe walls, the inscription in bright letters running under the cornice, theelaborate ceiling, and last of all, the bold and richly decorated mantelpiecewith its shields, brilliant with tinctures and metals.
