HERSEY Arrived in France, June 8, 1918, with rank of Briga-dier General. Promoted to Major General, October 1, 1918; Commanded 4th Division, October 31, : Maine, December 1, Service Medal. For exceptionally meritorious and distin-guished services. As a brigade commanderduring the latter part of the Meuse-Argonneoperation he exhibited qualities of excellentleadership and sound judgment. His brigadeattacked and penetrated the strong enemyposition of Bois des Loges and wrested thisstrong point from the enemy. The success ofhis brigade in this engagament was in a largemeasure due to his able leadership. Later hecommanded with distinction the 4th Divisionduring its operations in the occupied terri-tory. G.
