The community of gassho-zukuri houses in Shirakawa Village of Gifu Japan Asia

The severe coldand heavy snow of this area gaverise to thepeculiar gassho-sukuri or literally "praying hands"shaped houses named after 60 degree angled roofs which are made in the shape of hands clasped in Buddhist prayer. This type of unique but extremely functional dwelling was first described in the famous German architect Bruno Taut's 1939 book, "Rediscovering Japanese Beauty." Today there are some 100 of these dwellings that are still used as residences and in 1999,the houses were registered collectively as a World Heritage Site.
