Just visible on the highest point of the central headland is the top of the Ministry of Defence building on the Faraid Head base. Military exercises take place over the sea in this area, and on the adjoining mainland peninsula of Cape Wrath. To the northwest of, and visible from Balnakeil Bay, is a small island called An Garbh-eilean, which is used as a target in live firing exercises.
