St. Catherine's Monastery, in a spectacular natural setting at the foot of Mount Sinai , houses priceless works of art, including Arab mosaics, Greek and Russian icons, and one of the largest collections of illuminated manuscripts in the world .It is the oldest working Christian monastery and the smallest diocese in the world. A formidable fortification, with granite walls up to 35 metres in height, it was built by Emperor Justinian to commemorate the site of the burning bush.
