Summer Day. Instead of a traditional mill, Weissenbruch now painted a modern pumping engine, which regulated the level of the water in the polder. He probably made this oil sketch somewhere outside of The Hague. Weissenbruch tacked the sheet of paper onto the lid of his paintbox: the tiny holes are still visible in the corners. Back in his studio, he incorporated the motif into one of his completed paintings.
