There are signs of residual bronchitis, sibi-lant, sonorous, and subcrepitant rales, and in young infants, largemucous rales. The signs may be hardly noticeable or heard only incertain portions of the chest. Prognosis.—In both forms of chronic bronchitis the prognosis as tolife is very good. The chances of ultimate restoration of the lungto the normal condition depend much on the mode of living and thepower of the individual to outgrow the conditions of rachitis andlymphatism Mhich exist in many of these cases. Many of these formsof chronic bronchitis disappear ultimately; the emphysematous formmay persist into adult Fig. 135.—Emphysema of lung; boy, aged eight years; barrel-shaped thorax. Same patient as Fig. Treatment.—The treatment of chronic bronchitis is directed towardimproving the general tone of the economy and also the musculatureof the heart. It must be assumed that in these cases the heart aswell as the other organs suffers from a lack of power, to which maybe attributed the relaxed condition of the circulation in the mucousmembrane of the bronchi. Life in the open air, hydriatic treatment, and drugs, such as strychnin, will have beneficial eflects. The mucousmembranes are benefited by preparations of iron which contain iodin(syrup of the iodide of iron), freshly prepared and given in largedoses. Cod-liver oil is an excellent tonic in winter. The skin shouldbe protected from extremes of heat and cold by suitable underwear. DISEASES OF THE BRONCHI 585 Moderate participation i
