Victoria Embankment. 19th-century photochrom (photographic lithograph) of a paddle steamer by the Victoria Embankment in London, England, in the 1890s. This area of the north bank of the Thames is between Hungerford Bridge and Waterloo Bridge (1817, upper left). It had been marshy land until reclaimed in the 1860s. Completed in 1870, the Victoria Embankment Gardens lie between the buildings at left (including the Savoy Hotel) and the new river bank. At top left is the Hotel Cecil (built 1890-96, demolished 1930). The Egyptian obelisk Cleopatra's Needle was erected in 1878. This photochrom is from the Detroit Publishing Company.
