Ifthe overgrown organ inter-feres with coitus, or if it becomes easily inflamed or irritated and causesthe individual decided discomfort, the redundant portion should be ampu-tated. Nothing is gained by the amputation of the clitoris for nympho-mania or for masturbation. To the discredit of gynaecology, this operationobtained considerable favor for a time by the enthusiastic advocacy of BakerBrown and a few indiscreet followers. Anomalies of the Hymen.—The hymen is normally a rather delicateannular membrane at the outletof the vagina, with a centralperforation into which the tipof the little finger can be in-serted. There are, however,many variations from this ruleof form and orifice. The lattermay be crescentie, with theconcavity embracing closely theurethra. There may be twosymmetrical openings side In-side, or the orifices may bepunctate and numerous (cribri-form hymen). The edge of thehymen may lie dentated, look-ing as though it had been rup-tured by coitus, or it may beapparently irregularly carvedout of thickened tissue (sculp-tured hymen). The orifice maybe exceedingly minute, or themembrane may be imperforate,causing, after puberty, hsemato-colposand hsematometra.
