Gages Used in Checking Valve Gear Dimensions at the West Albany Shops setters often make .slight alterations when squaring a valve, and by the time a locomotive has had three or four generalrepairs there may be serious differences between the actualvalve gear dimensions and those called for by the blue an example of the latter case, the practice of makingvalve adjustments by upsetting or lengthening the radius barmay be mentioned. This results in a radius bar that doesnot correspond in length with the link radius and introducesirregularities into the valve motion. Sometimes the distancesbetween pin centers of the combination lever are not in theright proportion, or the lead is not properly equalized by theunion link. Perhaps the nght-hand valve stem is longerthan the left or the valve chamber bushings are too neartogether. A valve gear may be completely overhauled and all wornparts renewed, tiut if the above-mentioned discrepancies are val
