Volunteers measure carbon dioxide levels in soil on reclaimed coal tips at Varteg Field Trial Site near Pontypool South Wales UK
The Varteg Hill Field Trial Site is a scientific experiment started in 1990 by Professor Martin Haigh of Oxford Brookes University in an attempt to find the best way to create a self-sustaining environment on former colliery coal tips. 10,000 trees were planted between 1991 and 1997. Since then the tree growth and the various flora and fauna that have re-inhabited the site have been monitored annually by volunteers. Until 2005 the volunteers were recruited by Earthwatch.
