Of late years,either this custom has fallen into abeyance,or the people are unwilling to exhibit theirtrophies to a white man, for Mr. Bates, whospent so much time with them, never evensaw a preserved head, or could hear of onebeing used. Like many other natives, the Munduruciishave to pass through a horribly painfulordeal before they can be admitted into therank of men. There is a strange, weird-like character about the whole proceeding. The reader must know that South Americapossesses a great number of ants, many ofwhich sting most horribly.
