On the 14th of September,1854, the allied army landed at Eupatoria, in the Crimea,and the extent of their preparations will be understoodwhen it is known that forty thousand men, with a largenumber of horses and a full equipment of artillery, wereput on shore in a single day! On the 20th of September the battle of the Alma wasfought by fifty-seven thousand English, French, andTurkish troops, against fifty thousand Russians. Thebattle began at noon, and four hours later the Russianswere defeated and in full retreat. The Allies might have marched into Sebastopolwith very little resistance, but their commanders were un-certain as to the number of troops defending the city,and hesitated to make the attempt. On the 17th of October the siege began. A grand at-tack was made by the Allies, but was unsuccessful, andeight days later the famous charge of the Light Brigadeat Balaklava was made. On the 5th of November theRussians attacked the Allies at Inkerman, and were re-pulsed. The battle of Inkerman was fought in a fog byforty thousand Russians against fifteen thousand Frenchand English. The latter had the advantage of positionand weapons. The Allies frankly credited the Russiantroops with the greatest bravery in returning repeatedlyto the attack as their battalions were mowed down by thesteady fire of the defender
