The only machine required in the dampening roomis the dampening machine, and where large quanti-ties of collars, cuffs and shirts are to be dampened,it is wise to have a machine for each class of goods, because the degree of dampness suitable for a collarwill not do for a shirt, and it is quite difficult toadjust a machine, which has been already adjustedfor shirts, to dampen collars properly and then read-just it to properly dampen shirts. A machine, when itis once adjusted for dampening, should not be changedas frequent changes will affect the uniformity of thework. It is essential for the best results, either in collarsor shirts, that the dampening be done uniformly, andto get uniform dampness is a source of great anxietyto the average laundryman. Of course, the ideal damp- — 76. Tig. as. COLiIiAR AND CXTFF DAMPKNEK. (Adams Laundry Machinery Co.) — 77 — ening is with sheets, but in laundries doing a largeamount of work, this method is impracticable on accountof its being too slow. A machine must therefore beemployed which will have the desired capacity. The universal type of dampening machine is onewhich dampens goods on the blotter principle. Thegoods are passed between two cloth-covered rolls, thecloth on the rolls being saturated with water. Thewater is carried to the covered rolls by means of ametal roll revolving in a trough of water, which tranfersthe water from the trough to the cloth-covered machines are made with an adjustment whichwill allow any amount of pressure required between themetal roll and the cloth roll, and the greater thepressure the less is the amount of water. The twocloth-covered rolls in a well-adjusted machine do nottouch each
