Genome research. Operation of a \colony picker\" robot, used for the automated replication of specific recombinant DNA sequences at Genethon, Paris. A computer vision system allows the robot to select particular colonies (by colour, density or shape); each is penetrated by a needle & innoculated into wells on one of the rectangular well plates. The picking needles are sterilised & the process repeated; maximum picking rates of up to 1000 colonies per hour. The recombinant genes that give rise to individual colonies on the original plate are stored as YACs (yeast artificial chromosomes)."
