Evacuation of residents, Carlisle. Rescue workers wading through flood waters with boats in Warwick Road, Carlisle, Cumbria, England. This road is usually a busy road leading to the M6 motorway but on 8th January, 2005, the equivalent of one month's worth of rain (over 100 millimetres) fell in 36 hours, causing the River Eden and its tributaries to overflow severely. This resulted in the worst flood for more than 100 years. Hundreds of people were evacuated as homes flooded and roads were closed. Three people died and millions of pounds worth of damage was caused to nearly 3000 properties. Photographed on 9th January, 2005.
