Macrophotograph of a specimen of pink granite. Granite is an intrusive igneous rock, formed largely from quartz, potassium orthoclase feldspar, plagioclase feldspar and biotite mica. The precise combination of these components, and the addition of other minerals in small amounts, determines the type of granite. This specimen gets its pink colouration from mineral impurities in the potassium feldspar, and was collected in Ross of Mull, Scotland. Magnification x1 at 35mm size.
