His father, John McDonald, was of4=^ Scotch extraction, a native of Pennsylvania, andby occupation a farmer. He was a man of sterlingworth, determined, industrious, and self-sacrificing. Hedied when the subject of this sketch was still in in-fancy, thus depriving him of his main support andcounsel, and casting on him for the future many bur-dens and responsibilities. Ilis mother, Eleanor (Piatt)McDonald, was a Pennsylvanian. Her ancestors wereFrench Huguenots, who located first in New Jersey andafterwards settled permanently in Ohio.
