In the beginning of March the October whelps were let outall day, and on March 5th we put them, with the older dogs,under the hood of the fore-companion. In the evening thecover was put on, and when during the night the hole near theedge of the ice became filled up with snow, it got so warm inthe hutch that the hoar-frost and ice melted and all the dogs gotwet. The pups felt the cold terribly when they were let out inthe morning, and we therefore took them down into the saloonuntil they were warm CHAPTER V THE THIRD SUMMER On the Seventeenth of May the Fram was in about 830 45north latitude and 120 50 east longitude. We again celebratedthe day with a flag procession, as on the previous Seventeenth ofMay. Mogstad sat on the bearskins in the sledge, driving ateam of seven dogs, and with the band {, Bentzen) at his as we were arranging the procession for the march uponthe ice, five female narwhals suddenly appeared, and immediatelyafterwards a small seal was seen in the lane abreast of the ship—an enlivening sight, which we accepted as a good omen forthe coming summer. The great hummock, which was the scene of our merry-mak-ings on the Seventeenth of May last year, was now so far awayand so difficult to reach on account of lanes and rugged ice thatthe festivities in the open air were limited to the flag proc
