The start was made fromthe Tuileries Gardens in Paris at four p. m.,before an enthusiastic French gathering oftwo hundred thousand people. Nine of the sixteen starters landed onFrench soil the same evening; the remain-ing seven crossed the English Channelthat night or early the next morning. Thewriters balloon, the United States,piloted by himself, ably assisted by MajorHersey of the Wellman Polar Expedition
