Previously known as Zuiderzee, it was cut off from the Wadden Sea by the Afsluitdijk dyke built in 1932 and about 45% of the former sea was reclaimed as polders. Presently it is a vast shallow freshwater lake (up to 4-5 m depth) and the largest freshwater basin in the country.
