Pickering Castle, 12th century, (c1990-2010). Reconstruction drawing showing how the first wooden motte and bailey castle may have appeared in the early 12th century. Originally a timber and earth motte and bailey castle built by the Normans under William the Conqueror in 1069-1070. It was developed into a stone motte and bailey castle.
