As our subject was only twelve years old whenhis father died he began to realize the responsibili-ties of life earlier than most boys. He remainedwith his widowed mother at the old Alorton home-stead until he reached the age of twenty-one, whenlie went to Junction City, and engaged inbusiness as a cattle dealer, making purchases in dif-ferent parts of Texas, Colorado and Kansas, andshipping herds to the Eastern markets. After sevenyears he returned home, and became interested inthe meat business at Broad Brook in partnershipwith his brother. William E., the firm dealing also.
