Bronze version of the Statue of Liberty, also known as Liberty Enlightening the World by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi. Luxembourg Gardens, Paris, France.

“Egypt carrying the light to Asia” was the title of a proposal for a colossal neoclassical statue by the French artist Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, to be erected in Port Said at the entrance to the Suez Canal. However in 1869 this plan was declined due to the cost. Several years later the idea was revived and pitched in America with the new title of “Liberty Enlightening the World”, and in 1886 the project came to fruition with the inauguration of the iconic Statue of liberty in New York Harbour. In 1906 a bronze casting made from an original model was erected in the Luxembourg Gardens of Paris where it stood until 2014 when it was removed to be displayed in the Musée d’Orsay. This new bronze replica now stands in its place.
