This Fulani girl from Bele Kwara, Niger has walked 10 kilometers to attend the weekly market in the town of Torodi. She sports the traditional Fulani facial scarring that is considered beautiful. The scarring is done with a razor blade, and charcoal powder mixed with cream is rubbed into the fresh wound to create the darkened effect. These are not rites of passage - she chose to have it done, because it is considered beautiful.
