The city walls of the ancient city of Sravasti

The path to wisdom and enlightenment, then, lies through the conquest of one's own self, one's passions, desires and cravings, in a deeper sense, of one's own ego and sense of self. "One's own self conquered is better than all other people; not even a god . . . could change into defeat the victory of a man who has vanquished himself, and always lives under restraint," the texts quote the Buddha as teaching. Desire causes one often to feel discontented with one's present lot and to crave to be something else or to have something else that, in any event, can never provide lasting contentment. To overcome desire is to remove the cause of one's suffering.
