Facts,derived from the best available sources, have been presented,and an attempt has been made to convey to the reader anaccurate and comprehensive account of existing conditions inthe Territory. To this has been added much useful information upon thedifferent methods of minino- followed in the Territorv, andalso a synopsis of the regulations in force governing the dis-posal of lands and minerals. In the extreme northwest of Canada and as far removedas possible from the early settlements on the Atlantic seaboard,is a vast triangular-shaj^ed tract of territory, Avliicli, niitil theearly forties, bad not been jienetrated by the nnihiiiiited tradersof the Hudsons Bay Couipnny. This, at that time unknownterritory, is bounded on the south on the nortlioi-ii line of theprovince of British Columbia, (latitude CO), at a point onthe extreme southwest by a ])art of the littoral bclonoing- tothe United States Territory of Alaska, on the west by theeastern line of the Territory of Alaska, on the nurili bv theArrtic Ocean and on tlio east by the 136th meri(li;iii \\\v\ thenorthern ranges of the Ifocky ^Mountains.
